Purloined Letter by Edgar Allan Poe?

Reader participation was not & has never been Poe's intention when writing short stories. What he was trying to emphasize in "The Purloined Letter" was that Dupin could solve a mystery by pure "ratiocination". Dupin knew where the letter disappeared just by listening to Prefect Dupuis' description of the crime scene & cirstances itself. All Dupin had to do after was sneak in & retrieve the letter.
