How can I scare these people?

Look into the limits for your state's Small Claims Court. If you are within those limits, file your claim there. No lawyers saves you lots of money--it's fairly informal and the judge/arbitrator is very likely to take your side. Additionally, I would contact your County District Attorney's office and file a complaint.
