Speeding ticket with no proof of insurance?

Several months ago, I got a speeding ticket going about 60 mph at a 40 mph zone. I had accidentally taken out my proof of insurance and did not have it with me when the cop pulled me over. My ticket came out to be about about $700, $300 more than that of my friend who had previously been in a similar situation (but w/ insurance proof). At that time, I did not know I could ask to have it dismissed by going to court. Is it too late to have it changed? It was a lot of money and I'm quite sure it has tainted my driving record.
